In a surprising turn of events, Barcelona are looking to acquire the services of Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso and switch him to a more central role, Goal exclusively reveals.
The Spanish giants have allegedly started looking for potential replacements for Gerard Pique, who will turn 32 next year, and they have identified Marcos Alonso, a former Real Madrid academy graduate, as a possible long-term solution at center-back.
Despite the fact that Marcos Alonso built his career primarily playing as an offensively minded left-back, the Blaugrana boardroom believes he could be molded into a world-class center-back, if given the right coaching methods.
The Spaniard, who recently debuted for the Spain national team and now looks set to join the squad at the World Cup in Russia, already has certain experience playing at center-back, as he mainly played in the heart of the defense during his stay with Fiorentina. However, changing the position of a player at the ripe age of 27 will not be an easy task.
Anyway, Chelsea are reluctant to release the player and Barca might have to turn to Ajax’s youngster Matthijs De Ligt, who is already attracting interest from across Europe, after putting in impressive performances for the club this year.
What do you think? Should Barcelona sign Marcos Alonso to play him as a center-back or are there better options available on the market?
