Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are allegedly negotiating over a potential swap deal that would see Toby Alderweireld move to Old Trafford and Antony Martial go in the opposite direction.
Jose Mourinho has reportedly realized he needs to invest heavily in his defense in order for Manchester United to challenge their city rivals for the Premier League title next year. Moreover, the Portuguese manager is a huge admirer of Alderweireld, who is allegedly his priority summer target, and will be ready to go all out to sign the Belgian international, who looks set to leave Tottenham in the summer.
Alderweireld has only one year remaining on his current contract and having repeatedly refused to extend it, Tottenham will look to cash in on the experienced defender in the summer transfer window, rather than allow him to leave on a free transfer next year.
Meanwhile, the Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has identified Martial, who is interested in a move away from Old Trafford due to a long-standing feud with Mourinho, as a potential transfer target. If the Red Devils insist on getting a deal agreed for Alderweireld, Levy will ask for Martial in return.
Knowing how stubborn and persistent Levy and Tottenham can be in negotiations, it’s fair to say the stage looks set for a United-Tottenham swap deal including Toby Alderweireld and Antony Martial.
What do you think? Who will get the better deal if this swap goes through?
